the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice

So I finally watched the newest version of Hairspray. As a big fan of the older, wittier and definitely better (all due to the incredible beatnik scene) version, I was a bit wary of it, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. I'd heard that some people who formerly were not fans of Zac Efron had been won over by his performance. I'm happy to report that I was not. I thought his character was an obnoxious idiot, but my heart filled with happiness whenever dear Seaweed was onscreen. Seriously, I can't believe when faced with a choice of... THIS versus THIS
a suprising majority still go for Zac Efron, his bizarrely limp tongue and his fantastically awkward hand poisition. Elijah Kelley is clearly going "Alright, stay cool, stay cool, as soon as they snap a picture, you can take your hand off this crazy whiteboy's shoulder."
The movie also managed to reinforce that black people are and always have been better singers, better dancers and better-looking.
Zac Efron fans, hate away. Your angry anonymous comments make my world go round.

Ugh I can't stand Zac Efron either, and I agree with you about the whole black guys thing. Your blog is hilarious, by the way.

I have yet to see the new version just because I can't believe anything could top how subversive John Waters intended the original to be.

Well, I think it is worth a look, anyway!

hahaha, I have yet to watch Hairspray, but you've just reminded me to go rent it!

I've only seen Zac Efron on the CW TV show Summerland, which was kind of a flop and never really caught on with anyone, but he was okay there...

Mr. Efron is untalented and looks like he's made of plastic.

I 100% agree. I still haven't seen Hairspray, but I doubt Zac Efron will be winning me over. High School Musical 2 anyone? That scene with him running around singing and looking at his reflection and jumping on stuff? Wow, my reaction was alternating from my mouth hanging open and rolling around laughing at the awfulness of his acting.

Surely only teen-boppers can find anything appealing in Zac Efron?

Hey!!!
I love the original SO much. I've seen it so many times, that I don't know if I can bring myself to watch this new, updated version. I don't really like Zac Efron, but I'm mostly afraid to see John Travolta in drag! He is so freaking weird.
But if you liked it, maybe I'll rend it!

I just watched the dvd this weekend, along with factory girl, and it was the clear winner of the two.

I can't fathom how zac efron is a heartthrob to girls these days. He reminds me of this guy who went to junior high with me, and would wear foundation when he got a zit. Bring back the vintage jtt and devon sawa at least!

Haha! Excellent post! I have to say that I enjoyed the movie purely because of the cute clothes, and the opening song, "Good Morning Baltimore". Zac on the other hand... I can take or leave. If you want to see something really funny, look at Target's new Highschool Musical Barbies. In my opinion, Zac's never looked better!

Thank goodness. a couple of my friends have been transformed into Zac Efron fans. I refuse to watch the remake. I'm a huge fan of the original and of anything Jon Waters, in fact, so this remake kills me. That and I'm afraid I'll actually like it:0

I really liked the new Hairspray, although I did miss the "Squish squash kill that roach scene, haha"
