tonight we're going to party like its 1999

The 90's is definitely the decade I had to think about the most. I listen to very little music from the 90's, so it was hard to come up with 5 records I truly love from this time. I think if I was to be doing this post in a few months, there would definitely be some Outkast, because I'm looking for their first few albums on LP. However, at this point, I don't know enough of their stuff to put them on the list. However, this is what I do have...

My Top 5 Favourite Albums from the 90's:

Parliament - Tear the Roof Off 1974-1980:
Some might say it's unfair to put a best-of compilation from the 1970's on the 90's list. To them, I say "Have you heard how shitty the 90's were??" Kidding...a little. The point is, this is one of my favourite CD's, and the main reason I love Parliament like I do. It's definitely an excellent starter to Parliament as a band, and if I can talk like a skater for a second, dope as fuck.
Favourite track: "The Agony of Defeet" - I believe that if happiness had a sound it would be this.
Prince - Graffiti Bridge:
Frighteningly bad cover art aside, this album has a whole lot of gems, including the sublime George Clinton-Prince duet "We Can Funk" and some great guilty-pleasure jams like "New Power Generation". This album holds a special place in my heart, though, because this is the album that has my favourite song of all time on it: "Joy in Repetition".
Favourite track: "Joy in Repetition"Fiona Apple - Tidal:
First of all, what a gorgeous cover. I'm not as into Fiona Apple as I used to be, but this album is still just stunning. Her fantastic lyrics, her sensual voice, over an almost-hip-hop beat, it just blew me away.
Favourite track: "Criminal"
The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Bloodsugarsexmagik:
First of all, I enjoy the Red Hot Chili Peppers a lot, but I think most of their lyrics are just horrible. "I've got a mellowship, I've got a fellowship/I've got a nonstop "Yo swan" hello chip/Born to adore the big bad bison/Thunderstorm and a man like Tyson/Popcorn peanuts lookin' at big butts/No I cannot keep my mouth shut/Rockin' to the beat of the fabulous forum/My Lakers I adore 'em/Blush my lady when I tell her/That I do indeed love to smell her/Sopping wet your pink umbrella/Do the dog with Isabella"?? Maybe it's just me....
Not at all their lyrics are bad though, some are gorgeous and inspired ("Under the Bridge") and even when their lyrics are silly and ridiculous, they are ridiculously fun to listen to.
Favourite track: "Suck My Kiss"

Will Smith - Big Willie Style:
Don't front, you love it.
Favourite track: "Candy"

Haha i prefer 'gettin jiggy with it' but ahh!

I love how you're not shy about what you like- i'm still kind of embarassed about Red Hot Chili Peppers. Even though they were sick when they were in their 'sock' phase....

BIG WILLIE STYLE!!! YES!
And I can understand the flogging molly issue. I think you still made a good 90's list. Much more respectable than mine would be.

thanks so much for the info. yeah, i so love fiona ..especially, then. i guess i got back into radiohead back then too. There were so many obsecure bands then..and they are still around..thankfully, like daniel johnston (is that right, Deviltown) and Wilco. I think some of Conor Oberst best stuff was in the 90's too..like drunk kid.

I really love Graffiti Bridge. Prince has made so many great albums throughout the decades. He's one of my favorites. He rarely disappoints. Yeah, the 90's did have a lot of crappy music. Great list.

Okay, no NIRVANA, but well...You aren't a hardcore fan like me ^^ I think the 90s are one of the most interesting decades, because I basically grew up in the 90s and it's so interesting for me to read something about them in retrospect.
Okay, there were the Spice Girls in the 90s, but that doesn't mean they were all shitty... No I know you didn't mean that one ^^ There were NIRVANA. R.E.M. . Okay two bands originated in the 80s. Bugger.
Hehe frighteningly bad cover art ^^ It's true. Those were probably the first experiments with Photoshop.
Even before I read what you wrote, I thought that I must comment on the beautiful cover of teh Fiona Apple album.
Hm I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And I love their lyrics too, so fun to listen to. Only you can't make sense out of them ^^ There is maybe one line in a song that expresses how I feel at one moment, but the other lines in that song tell the exact opposite - well most RHCP songs are just fun songs.

I agree.. I dont remember liking much of the music from the 90's.. except for the ones you've mentioned (I danced to Will Smith numerous times! lol) and then some. Prince! Oh yes please.. and Fiona Apple saved my life. But seriously, I think most people would agree that music in the 90's became a little dull.

Great post! I would also have a hard time coming up with my favorites from the 90s. A lot of what I listened to was just what everyone else in school was listening to - and it was a lot of crap!
